2.  New lipophilic benzofuran derivatives from Ratanhiae root.  Part 2.  Isolation and structural elucidation.      Stahl, Egon; Ittel, Ingrid.    Univ. Saarlandes, Saarbruecken, Fed. Rep. Ger.    Planta Medica  (1981),  42(2),  144-54.

Abstract

Two phenols, ratanhiaphenol I (I) and II (II), were isolated from the petroleum-ether ext. of Ratanhiae radix; their structures were elucidated by UV, IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR-spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, microhydrogenation and thermofractog.  Both compds. are effective UV-light filters and can be useful in sun protection prepns.

3.       Natural UV filters for sun screening.      Stahl, Egon; Ittel, Ingrid.    Univ. Saarlandes,  Saarbruecken,  Fed. Rep. Ger.    Parfuemerie und Kosmetik  (1981),  62(4),  97-100.

Abstract

Air-dried com. plant drugs were extd. with CH2Cl2 and then with MeOH, and the absorptivity of the exts. was detd. at 300 nm; 18 CH2Cl2 and 27 MeOH exts. had values ³7.  The lipophilic exts. were of prime interest as sunscreens because of water resistance.  Cinnamon bark ext., with the max. absorptivity, contained unstable cinnamaldehyde.  The ext. of Krameria (rhatany) root had high absorptivity, and thin-layer chromatog. showed the presence of several phenols, which were obtained in crystal form and had high absorbance at 250-350 nm.
